“They said they would be more pro-active about letting us know. Mrs Reynolds said she would try to attend next Tuesday’s hospital advisory committee meeting to protest the decision. The loss of the clinics means about 36 people a month have to continue to travel from Tararua to Palmerston North to see specialists in urology general surgery and ophthalmology. MidCentral Health’s justification was that more people including more Tararua patients could be seen in Palmerston North. Figures from the outpatient review show an extra 70 people a month were able to get appointments and over three months an extra 22 Tararua people had been seen as well. MidCentral Health general manager Lareen Cooper said the decision to keep the clinics in Palmerston North “will not suit everybody”. Initiatives had been put in place to help Tararua patients such as dedicated out-of-town car parks at the hospital and a shuttle operating around the hospital grounds.
